Why masking is not optional
Personal data masking is the legal obligation to remove or make unreadable any information about unrelated third parties before transmitting a document, in compliance with GDPR. You produce a bank statement as evidence. It contains the contact details of a transfer recipient unrelated to the case. This data must be masked.
An employment contract submitted to the court mentions the names of other company employees. This information should not be exposed.
Professional secrecy also requires you to redact certain information: fee amounts on produced invoices, identity of third parties mentioned in letters...
- GDPR: non-relevant personal data must be masked
- Professional secrecy: certain information cannot be disclosed
- Third-party protection: non-parties to the dispute have the right to anonymity
The trap of fake redaction
Fake redaction is the mere visual masking of text — using a black rectangle or highlighting — without actually deleting the underlying content from the PDF file. Classic mistake: drawing a black rectangle over sensitive text. The text remains present in the file. A copy-paste or a simple PDF editor can recover it.
Another mistake: using black highlighting in Word then exporting to PDF. Same problem: the underlying text is still there.
Real redaction permanently deletes the content. It doesn't hide it, it erases it. It's an irreversible operation, and that's precisely what's needed.
- A black rectangle doesn't delete text, it just visually hides it
- Text "redacted" in Word remains copyable after PDF export
- Only a specialized PDF redaction tool truly removes content

Redaction that truly deletes
PDF redaction is the irreversible removal of sensitive information from a digital document, unlike simple visual masking which leaves the content recoverable. Avocachet's redaction tool lets you select areas to redact, and once applied, the content under the black rectangle is permanently deleted from the file.
You can redact text, images, tables. The tool works on native PDFs as well as scans.
Before applying redaction, you preview exactly what will be masked. Once confirmed, it's irreversible: always keep an original copy.
- Permanent content deletion, not just visual masking
- Works on native PDFs and scans
- Preview before irreversible application

Checklist before transmission
Before transmitting a document to a third party (opponent, expert, court), review: names of unrelated persons, account numbers, personal addresses, irrelevant amounts.
For bank statements: redact unrelated transfers, third-party account numbers, client references.
For contracts: redact signatures of non-party witnesses, initials on irrelevant pages, confidential appendices.
For letters: redact mentions of other cases, references to other clients, fee information.
